UM Exclusive: Little India Talk About Studio Process Behind “Up All Night”

Little India released their EP “Up All Night” on November 19th. Conan of Little India was kind enough to talk to us about what went into recording their debut EP!

We started this project as three friends just having a good time playing music for ourselves in Dallyns basement. We eventually started writing our own music and then a friend in a local band asked us to open for them at a club downtown Vancouver, so we thought we’d give it a shot. We had only been together as Little India for about 2 months, so we were nervous. The show went great and we got asked to play there again as a headliner before our set was even finished. Our friends were crazy! They wanted our music in their cars and home stereos, so we decided to get to work… This was in January by the way. It’s already almost November, talk about a lengthily process. I guess it’s because we’re such perfectionists.

We started recording the EP back in January – March and we weren’t happy with what we had heard from our producers. So we decided to ditch the project and start again with a new producer. We played a show in April and Paul, our producer for this EP, approached us and was very excited about our songs, so we started work with him in May. By then we had “All You Know” and decided to add it to the EP. We had a lot of fun with this process; Paul was very good at making us feel relaxed in the recording space. It was all very new to us because we had never professionally recorded anything before.

I think there was more horsing around in the studio than actual recording; we were all just having fun with the whole experience. We finished recording all the tracks and heard the mixes, and being perfectionists, we weren’t too happy. So we decided to mix the EP ourselves… which involved more horsing around. We learnt so much and we truly had a great time! However, never mixing anything before we decided to reach out to someone who actually knew what they were doing.

Andrew reached out to Michael Brauer (Coldplay, Atlas Genius, Grizzly Bear, Vaccines, Rolling Stones, and many more), which was a stretch, especially for a band with no track record, but Michael liked our sound and wanted to work with us. Himself and his assistant Will Hensley did a fantastic job on the mixing of our EP. We were extremely happy when we heard the final product. Joe LaPorta then did the final touches and mastered it at Sterling Sound. These are all people we’ve looked up to over the years because they’ve worked with some of our favourite artists, so it was a special experience for us!

We took our time with getting everything right, but at the same time we had tried to get our EP out as soon as possible. Believe me when I say Nov 19th is the soonest we can release our EP, after all the crazy things we’ve been through. Our friends and family have been hounding us for the past several months, so now that we have a release date it’s nice to give them peace of mind. I think they’re more excited about the release than we are! We love them and appreciate their support, truly couldn’t have done it without them. Don’t get me wrong though, we’re excited for the release! We’re over the moon about it all! It’ll be nice to have all our hard work come to an end, and to have the great memories along with it all. Especially excited because our good friend Conrad Hillis did a Banging remix of Sleep for us. It’s on in my car 24/7.

The EP is called “Up All Night”, suggested by Dallyn, because it represents a time in our life where I guess we always stayed up all night, each for different reasons. I personally haven’t been able to sleep for the longest time, I don’t know what it is but I lie in bed for hours, that’s what some of the lyrics in the EP are about… cough* cough* Sleep.

We’re currently working on a couple music videos for the EP and we’ve already started recording new material with a new producer, which we hope to release early next year. But as of now, we can’t wait to release and share our Debut EP with everyone and let the listener enjoy it as much as they’d like.
